Dengue fever is caused by mosquito-borne viruses carrying the dengue virus. The symptoms of dengue fever usually appear between three and fourteen days after infection.
Dengue fever has always been a persistent health problem in India. Over the last two decades especially, the occurrence of dengue has been worryingly regular, with cases found around the year in the Southern States, and between April and September in the Northern States. While Dengue is rarely life-threatening, with less than 2 percent cases proving fatal, it leads to high fever and loss of productivity which can be avoided through a few precautions.
Dengue – Spread, and Symptoms
Dengue is a viral infection that spreads through a particular type of mosquito found in tropical and sub-tropical regions across the world. The mosquito’s bite is sufficient to infect a human. This is the same type of mosquito that causes other viruses such as Zika and Chikungunya.
An infected person can start exhibiting symptoms between 2 to 7 days. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
Prevention
Clearly, the best way to avoid dengue fever is to avoid mosquito bites. It is advised that repellants should be used on the skin and also on clothes. One should avoid wearing short-sleeved shirts and short-length trousers in areas infested with mosquitos.
Mosquitos thrive in stagnant waters. We should make an attempt to avoid the concentration of stagnant water in our surroundings. Periodic fumigation at home and workspace is also helpful.
Recovering from Dengue
An appropriate diet is essential in quick recovery from Dengue. Papaya leaf juice and vegetable juices contain the nutrients essential for boosting platelet count in blood and for increasing immunity. Additionally, Coconut water is also recommended in order to keep the body hydrated.
Neem leaves have been known to contain the spread of viruses. Their juice can also be consumed in order to ensure a quick and complete recovery.
A patient should avoid oily and fried foods, and also avoid fats, caffeine, aerated drinks, and alcohol.
As always, a qualified medical practitioner is best equipped to diagnose and cure dengue. Always keep your doctor informed of any health issues and keep visiting your doctor regularly for health checkups and advice.
